Community Health Worker Intern
During my internship at BACI (Burmese American Community Institute), I worked within the Community Health and Wellness Program Department. I was part of a team of six, and we worked closely together to provide reliable health information, resources, and support to the community. In my role as a Community Health Worker Intern, I assisted with outreach and helped address the health needs of clients. Being part of an all-women team was especially meaningful, as their dedication and teamwork inspired me and contributed greatly to my learning experience.

-
I assisted with event preparation by purchasing necessary supplies and setting up events, including arranging food, organizing tables, and preparing gift items to create a welcoming and well-organized environment for attendees.
-
I created educational and awareness flyers to share important health information with the community and translated them into Hakha Chin and Burmese.
-
I developed healthcare presentations for workshops and outreach activities by researching relevant topics and organizing content into clear, engaging formats.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Throughout my internship with the Community Health and Wellness Program at BACI, I gained valuable experience in community health education, teamwork, and professional responsibility. I was expected to support health outreach efforts, assist with event preparation, and contribute to the development of educational materials and presentations. These expectations required strong organization, reliability, and a willingness to learn in a fast‑paced environment.
I met these expectations by consistently completing my assigned tasks, including creating educational flyers, developing healthcare presentations, assisting with event setup, and managing sign‑in and documentation during community events. Through these responsibilities, I strengthened my communication skills by working closely with team members and interacting with community participants, helping ensure that events ran smoothly and effectively.
Overall, this internship was a meaningful learning experience that helped me grow both personally and professionally. It gave me a clearer understanding of how community‑based health programs operate and how much coordination, communication, and compassion go into serving diverse populations. I developed stronger organizational and teamwork skills, became more confident in my ability to contribute to outreach efforts, and gained a deeper appreciation for the role of public health in supporting community well‑being. This experience let me appreciate the value of community healthcare and the impact it can have on individuals who rely on these services. It helped me understand how much effort goes into planning, organizing, and delivering programs that truly meet people’s needs. I also gained a deeper respect for the professionals who work in this field and the dedication they show in supporting community well‑being.
The sign-in sheet I used for our events

This is the sign-in sheet we used to record client attendance during events and keep track of participants for documentation and follow-up purposes.
Another form of sign-in we used for our events

This is the client intake and consent form that we used for all of our events. This form asked for and confirmed our clients’ eligibility and collected essential information to ensure proper documentation and participation in services.
